The ABC lists according to Vera F. Birkenbihl (and also other authors; among others, the concept is most often associated with her) are a very simple and extremely effective learning and thinking technique that can be used in many places.

What is an ABC list?

An ABC list is a sheet of paper on which you write each letter of the alphabet (A to Z) vertically on the edge. You decide on a topic (e.g. " Learning ", "Friends", "Future Plans", "Swimming", " Problem Solving "...). Now the point is to write down a word or phrase for each letter that fits the topic. You don't have to start with A, but you write down a word that comes to mind - you can even leave the X blank.

What can you do with it?

Brainstorming & Creativity: It is a method of connecting your own knowledge, your own ideas and your own thought networks and seeing new connections. Often, you can find more diverse terms simply by looking at the letters than with normal brainstorming.

Take inventory: You can immediately see how many terms you can think of on the topic.
Preparing for presentations or texts: You can use the ABC list to collect ideas for a speech, a language test, or a text.

This teaching method helps you to have a better overview of a subject or an exercise (vocabulary, games, etc.). As a teacher, you can also easily use this method in a group.

When to start?

Before learning or solving a problem: To collect ideas, even if you think you can't think of anything else - the letters inspire you to think differently.

After a learning process: To review what has been learned.
Group skills: In groups, the ABC list is great for collective brainstorming.

Effect on the one who uses it

Activate associations: Through the letters, opinions and associations arise differently than if you just started writing - the mind thinks "outside the box".

Expand your knowledge: You discover new connections and aspects of the subject.

Increases motivation and creativity: It's fun and motivates you to keep doing it.

Promotes memory: By actively writing and searching for terms, you strengthen your memory.

Build mental networks: This method encourages thinking and connections regarding possibilities, events, or pieces of knowledge.

The ABC list is a simple but powerful method for promoting creativity, ideas, and memory. It is quick to make, can be used alone or in a group, and is ideal for problem solving, learning, writing texts, or preparing presentations, for example. It also helps with "thought jams" or blockages: The letters inspire new thought paths.

Just try it – your creativity will explode!
